Toxin Free Laundry Products

IMG_1517As I mentioned in a previous blog posting about detoxing your home, I’ve been using Tropical Traditions powdered laundry detergent.  However, when I went to reorder recently they were out of stock (guess this great product has really become popular!).

A new search for natural laundry detergents led me to this recommended list on Mother Earth Living’s website.  I was intrigued by the posting about soapberries and checked out BerryPlus Soap Nuts Concentrated Liquid Laundry Soap at reuseit.com.  Just 2 fluid oz of this product washes 20 loads!  The small bottle takes up practically no space in your laundry room – especially nice for me since the laundry room in our Chicago condo is literally a small closet with a stackable unit, and for my college student kids doing laundry in their dorms.  I love the dropper for getting exactly the right amount without any mess or need for a measuring spoon.

It is designed for cold water and HE washing, but works at any temperature and no additional fabric softener is needed.  The big news though is that this stuff works.  My clothes are clean and smell good.  I also purchased the Static Eliminator Reusable Dryer Sheet and found it really reduced static cling from the dryer (no small feat in dry winter weather).  No chemicals and just leave it in the dryer to use over and over.

Reusit.com also sells Eco Nuts Natural Liquid Laundry Detergent made out of the same soapberry ingredients in an aluminum bottle.  It is less expensive (about $0.14 per load for the 10 oz bottle, $0.18 for the 4 oz bottle) than the BerryPlus ($0.35 per load for the 2 oz bottle) but I love the dropper and eliminating the need for a measuring spoon which wastes soap and has to be washed.  The BerryPlus is more concentrated, using about 1/2 teaspoon per load versus the Eco Nuts using about a teaspoon.  Currently only the 2 oz bottle of BerryPlus is available at reusit.com but I’m told the bigger sizes will be back in stock soon which would be more economical.

Thanks to all of these entrepreneurs who are creating products that are truly good for both people and planet.  Was I disappointed that my favorite laundry soap was out of stock?  For a couple of minutes but that led me to find something I like even better.  Reminded me once again of these words of wisdom (which has happened to me so many times now I’ve lost count!).
