Superfood Smoothie

smoothie1Before Paleo, I used to have a fruit smoothie for breakfast almost every morning and drank it in the car on the way to work.  Unfortunately it was a lot of sugar and I was starving again by mid morning and it wasn’t helping with my progress on losing that last 15 lbs.  Now I usually have eggs and bacon or sausage or some kind of leftovers for breakfast (more on breakfast in a later blog post).  But sometimes I want a quick smoothie for either breakfast or as a quick lunch or dinner.

I was in Chicago recently and came across a wellness clinic and juice bar called Element Wellness.  I had a lovely chat with Dave DeCelles (Holistic Nutritional Counselor) for an hour about all things food and wellness.  While we chatted I sipped on a Superfood Smoothie and it was delicious and not too sweet.  He gave me the recipe which includes things I’ve been trying to incorporate more of into my diet like chia seeds, hemp seeds and bee pollen.  So for those mornings when I want something light (like before yoga) or have the urge for a smoothie and want something super healthy and not too sweet, I pull out the blender and make one of these.

My old blender died recently and I bought this great new Breville Hemisphere Control Blender (thanks to Nom Nom Paleo for the product recommendation).  As with most things I ordered it on Amazon prime to get free shipping and was pleased with the product reviews I read there.  I love it – it is fantastic for green smoothies with a button just for Smoothies that really gets all the frozen fruit pieces to a smooth consistency.

smoothie 2If you are taking your smoothie on the go, a few years ago I found these compostable straws and cups made from plants or recycled content (a better use for corn than eating in my opinion…).  A case lasts a long time but they don’t biodegrade in the box!

Superfood Smoothie

  • 1 cup filtered water
  • 2 tablespoons chia seeds
  • 2 tablespoons hemp seeds
  • 1 tablespoon raw cacao powder
  • 1 teaspoon bee pollen
  • 1/2 banana (I keep peeled banana halves in the freezer)
  • large handful organic spinach, kale or chard (or power greens mix)
  • 1/2 cup frozen organic blueberries
  • 1 tablespoon coconut oil (alternatively you can add coconut butter, raw honey, avocado, stevia or almond butter)
