Just Natural Hair Care

It’s pretty alarming what is in many of the products we use every day.  Especially for products I use on a daily basis, I want them to be as free as possible of questionable ingredients and I want them to work well and smell good.   I also want products that are gluten and soy free.  Turns out gluten is in many haircare products (shampoos, conditioners, hair spray, mousse and other styling products) and it’s often listed under other namesFragrances in products are often not labeled in any detail and can consist of problematic chemicals.

I thought I was doing well with the products we were using, but as I reviewed the labels, I wasn’t sure about some of the ingredients.  So back to the trusty EWG website to check them out. If a product isn’t listed in their database, you can Build Your Own Report with a list of ingredients and find out whether those ingredients are harmful or not.  To speed up that process I found ingredient lists online and copied and pasted.

I found ingredients in my shampoo and conditioner that weren’t Dirty Dozen awful, but are still questionable (like Retinyl Palmitate) and you wonder why they need to be in there.  It feels like finding a needle in a haystack to find products that are free of all of these things.  The EWG website can help by listing products in each category by their hazard scale of 0 (no hazard) to 10 (high hazard) so you can search for products with low hazard scores.

There are many great companies out there (thankfully more and more all the time) making truly pure and natural products.  I found one we like for my family’s hair care needs.  Just Natural has a wide variety of shampoos and conditioners for different hair issues.  We especially like the Thicker Hair formula.  Also remember that many people often use way more product than they need.  I’ve found a little goes a long way and makes these products more economical.  Also check out their fabulous body washes and lotions.  Your dogs can benefit too!

And on the topic of hair, just to be completely honest, I have my hair professionally colored (just can’t bring myself to do the all natural gray yet).  Yes, it has chemicals in it, but my stylist and I found brands with as few as possible, and I am not perfect about everything I put into my body (I do my best).  I do believe the choices I’ve made are helping my body do it’s job of eliminating toxins and I feel great so it’s working for me!
